a jazz notebook

I created this blog as a way to share some of the ideas I work on in my practicing with the reader. The most important part of my musical development comes from the lessons I learn when listening to recordings. Anytime I listen to something new and hear an idea that perks my interest, I make a mental note to go back and transcribe it. I do not think of these "transcription excerpts" as licks or small ideas that should be practiced and mimicked, but melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic lessons presented by the original performer that I try to add to my own playing through analysis and adaptation. I am sharing these excerpts with the reader in hopes that it will prove beneficial to their practicing and provide an oppurtunity to share the recordings that have been essential to my developement. I also want to encourage new students that while transcribing entires solos is important, transcribing one or two bars can sometimes be just as beneficial to your musical growth. Don't let the intimidation of transcribing five choruses of complex rhythms or advanced harmonic ideas prevent you from learning this music from the source. General Info
